1 · The self-contained proof
A hidden message, threaded through a real report using the Word Cipher
In 1895 J. B. Millett hid a private opinion inside his own Baconiana article, then published the key — the one case in the corpus where both halves are in hand. The gold is the concealed statement; the dimmed text is his genuine report. The message is a subsequence: select the marked phrases, skip the cover between them.
…Much of the correspondence was from avowed Baconians who wished to protect Bacon’s reputation from being sullied with publications in his name. If public attention could have been concentrated on the method rather than the results, in the writer’s opinion it would have been better for Dr. Owen the discoverer of the cipher. ↑ message begins — buried in the last clause of a real paragraph The doctors say that inflammation means heat, and that there is no inflammation without a cause for it. It was the “heat” displayed that attracted the writer’s attention. The concealed statement, recovered (the gold, read in order)
“It would have been better for Dr. Owen, the discoverer of the cipher, to have made public his cipher method at the start, and thus have forestalled criticism… he would have run a great risk — that of having some other decipherer, by using the disclosed method, bring out rival books. He should, however, have taken it.”
Reading of the whole document: 13 of 16 message-phrases located verbatim and in order. Corrects the original Experiment Eleven colour-coding (message highlighted before keys; word-boundary matching). Honest limit: in this simple demo the selection is carried by the published key, not by visible marks — so it proves feasibility, not a deterministic rule.

Guide words — five
Fortune, Nature, Honour, Reputation, Pan. Beacons that locate the keys — not keys themselves. Marked in coloured pencil at every occurrence.

Key words
Cluster around each guide; head every sorted page. The actual content-selectors of the hidden text.
Concordant — single
A synonym of the key, so every related sentence is caught.
love → devotion, adore, adoration · king → majesty, highness, court
Concordant — double
A compound name assembled by “consort” — two words coupled by similarity so the name isn’t set whole.

The “system”
Sort the typed pages into piles by shared key; “unite and collect the dispersed and distributed matter.”
Transposition
When a joined sentence “reads in a vague or unnatural manner,” the decipherer transposes it — Owen’s “inversions and transpositions,” made concrete.
Parallel sentence
A line welded from parallel passages in different works that describe the same matter — “the parallels, concordances and similar matter.” Count in Sherman’s illustration: 2 — Winter’s Tale IV.4 + Bacon’s Essay on Gardens, mingled into one flower-passage.
3 · Bottom line
A semi-deterministic method
The word cipher has objective anchors a machine could verify — guides marked by colour, keys, “Begin here” start-cues, the double-word/consort pattern — wrapped around human-judgment steps: synonym expansion, transposition, and joining. The Millett proof confirms recovery needs the key or the marks; the carrier alone does not force the message. The one place the objective half becomes directly readable is the physical canvas — where the colour-marking of guides survives, and where the arrangement can be checked against the text.
